UK MA and MSc Scholarships in Languages, Swansea University

For the academic session 2007/08, Swansea University is offering up to 12 Taught Masters Bursaries to applicants from the UK or EU aiming to pursue MAs in Languages. Each award is worth GBP 1,500 towards tuition fees. Swansea University is also offering a number of International Office Postgraduate Scholarships. These awards make a GBP 1,000 contribution to fees for applicants from outside the EU. Both types of funding are available for the MA Translation with Language Technology and the MA Literary Translation.

MA Translation with Language Technology (MATLT)

The MATLT is a professionally focused, integrated course designed to ensure that entrants with proven foreign language competence emerge as successful and marketable future professionals equipped with the skills now in demand in the language services industry worldwide. Particular attention is paid to in-depth training with the latest Computer-Assisted Translation tools and to key techniques for building up translation specialisms. Our philosophy can be summed up in the phrase `hands on`: students learn by doing and we aim to teach strategies as much as solutions, based on our own extensive experience of working as and training translators. Successful MATLT graduates are now employed all over the world as freelance and in-house translators, project managers, terminologists, software developers and in many other capacities.

MA Literary Translation (MALT)

The MALT is designed to offer both an independent, intellectually stimulating scheme of study for advanced linguists and literary specialists, and a practical and theoretical training for those wishing to pursue literary translation in the course of their career. It is also suitable for practising translators who do not yet have but wish to gain formal qualifications. If you have a strong interest in literature and the specific features of literary expression in different languages, this flexible programme will give you a unique opportunity to develop your interests.

Both MA degree schemes can be pursued as full-time or part-time programmes. They are suitable for recent graduates of single or joint honours BAs (or international equivalents) in fields related to Languages, as well as for people with a less formally documented background who have significant relevant experience. All successful applicants for the MAs can be considered for either the Bursaries or the Scholarships, depending on their nationality.

Google to Sell Online Software Suite

Associated Press: Google Inc. will begin selling corporate America an online suite of software that includes e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets and calendar management, escalating the Internet search leader's invasion on technological turf traditionally dominated by Microsoft and IBM.

The expansion, scheduled to be unveiled Thursday, threatens to bog down Microsoft Corp.'s efforts to persuade businesses to buy the latest version of its market-leading Office suite that was developed along with its new Vista operating system.

Google's software bundle, to be sold for a $50 annual fee per user, also poses a challenge to International Business Machines Corp. and its Lotus suite.

While Google's latest foray into the corporate software market seems unlikely to topple the status quo right away, AMR Research analyst Jim Murphy said it's only a matter of time before the Mountain View-based company becomes a major player.

"This is just the beginning," Murphy said. "The real impact of what Google is trying to do probably won't be evident for another five years."

Google has been offering a free version of its online software suite called Google Apps for the past six months. More than 100,000 small businesses and hundreds of universities nationwide are using the free service, Google said.

The fee-based version, Google Apps Premier Edition, includes five times more e-mail storage - 10 gigabytes per e-mail box - as well as a guarantee that all services will be available 99.9 percent of the time with around-the-clock technical support. Google also is adding mobile access to e-mail accounts through the BlackBerry devices that tether workers to their offices.

"This is a big step for us, but I think it's a reasonable step," Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said in an interview Wednesday. "Our product is so cheap that it's sort of no-brainer to try it out."

By dangling its business software package at such a low price, Google is giving companies a greater incentive to delay buying Microsoft's Office 2007 as they assess the pros and cons of a less expensive alternative, said Nucleus Research analyst Rebecca Wettemann.

"The timing (of this offer) is just brutal for Microsoft. It's definitely a shot across their bow," Wettemann said.

As they usually do, Google executives downplayed the company's intensifying rivalry with the world's largest software maker.

"We are not in this to get Microsoft," said Dave Girouard, general manager of Google's business software division. "We are in this to offer more compelling choices for consumers and businesses."

Echoing that sentiment, Schmidt said he is trying to discourage people from viewing Google as the fly in Microsoft's ointment. "We don't operate that way," he said. "We are trying to solve very different problems."

Microsoft welcomes the competition, said Kirk Gregersen, the Redmond, Wash.-based company's director of the Office suite. "It helps keep us on our toes."

If it can sell more software to companies, Google could become less dependent on online advertising. Google already has been selling its search technology to companies, but that initiative has only had a modest impact so far. Software licensing accounted for slightly more than $100 million, or 1 percent, of Google's $10.6 billion in revenue last year.

Microsoft, in contrast, relied on software sales for most of its $44 billion in revenue last year.

While Google has been expanding into software applications, Microsoft has been trying to build a more formidable Internet search engine. That effort hasn't prevented Google from widening its lead in online search during the past two years, emboldening the company to branch into other fields like corporate software.

Just how much Google is undercutting Microsoft's price is unclear. The listed retail price for Microsoft's Office suite ranges from $149 to $679, but corporate customers generally negotiate substantial discounts based on the number of licenses that they buy.

In research released last year, Merrill Lynch analyst Kash Rangan estimated that the average corporate cost for Office works out to about $60 to $120 annually per user, assuming the software is used over a two- to three-year cycle.

Price is rarely the only concern of large companies when they are deciding which software products to buy. Security, reliability and performance also sway corporate buying decisions.

By Google's own admission, Microsoft's word processing and spreadsheet program provide more bells and whistles than Google's online alternatives.

But Google's package will still appeal to many companies looking to provide more software tools and e-mail access to workers who work in stores or production plants that may not have all the latest applications, Murphy said.

Two Fortune 25 companies, Procter & Gamble Co. and General Electric Co., have already signed up for Google's software package. Google wouldn't disclose how many of those companies' employees are using the online suite.

Other early adopters include Salesforce.com Inc. - a pioneer in the push to deliver more software over Internet connections instead of distributing the programs on discs that directly install the coding on a hard drive.

The notion of leasing software online once was derided as a kooky concept because it was widely believed that most companies would never allow their vital information to be kept on computers owned and managed by an outsider like Google.

But the resistance to the idea seems to be dissipating as the Internet becomes more ingrained in daily living. In a survey of 198 organizations, Nucleus Research found that 51 percent were using some online software applications.

United States Grants: Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOGs)

What is a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)? FSEOGs are awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial needthose with the lowest Expected Family Contribution (EFC) numbers (see here ).

Federal Pell Grant recipients receive priority for FSEOG awards. Unlike Pell Grants, the amount of FSEOG funds you receive depends not only on your financial need but also on the amount of other aid you get and the availability of funds at your school. Receiving other aid might reduce the amount of your FSEOG award.

FSEOGs are administered by the financial aid office at each school participating in the program. We provide a certain amount of FSEOG funds each year to those schools. When all funds are used for that award year, no more FSEOG awards can be made for that year.

So, make sure you apply for federal student aid early to be considered for these funds. You can get between $100 and $4,000 a year, depending on when you apply, your financial need, the funding level of the school you're attending, and the policies of your school's financial aid office.

Your school can credit your grant funds to your school account, pay you directly (usually by check), or combine these methods. Also, with your permission, schools can credit your bank account. Schools must disburse at least once per term (semester, trimester, or quarter).

Schools that don't use formally defined, traditional terms must disburse funds at least twice per academic year. Can I receive a grant if I'm enrolled less than half time? Yes, if you're otherwise eligible. You won't receive as much as if you were enrolled full time, however.

How To Get An Online Degree From Home

Nowadays, the decision to pursue further education, most commonly some type of degree is one with continually increasing benefits. Regardless of the career you are looking to pursue, the attainment of a formal degree gives you higher levels of recognition amongst employers due to a perceived dedication and commitment to your field, competitive advantage over other job seekers, and greater earning potential. Becoming increasingly popular at the moment are online degrees.

Basically an online degree is exactly what it seems to be: A full course of formal study conducted over the wires of the world wide web. The student logs on to access the information at the website of the appropriate online college, makes their way through the course material in their own time then completes formal examination to be assessed by the online college's faculties and voila, a degree is attained.

These new online schools allow students to obtain an accredited online degree over many fields just as they would do if they were to attend a regular campus. This option is perfect for students who because of their location or circumstances cannot afford the time or effort to make their way to a physical college.

Online degrees are offered by many organizations and the most difficult decision for students seeking to pursue this form of education can often be the selecting of the most appropriate one. Usually they are split up into physical schools that also offer a university online degree and schools that maintain programs only online. While the most reliable option will generally be to go with the more reputable already established offline school, the benefits of lower costs and faster attainment can be attached to high quality solely online schools.

One example of a popularly undertaken degree is a criminal justice online degree. This degree, in a relatively short period of time gives the applicant a grounding in basic principles of criminal justice and prepares them for a career in law enforcement or the option to pursue higher studies in criminal justice.

Similarly those seeking an online online degree in education can pursue study in the same way. Numerous online schools cater for this popular field of study and accreditations can be obtained in far lesser periods of time than non online degrees in traditional colleges.

The quality and depth of online education now means that degrees taken over the web can be taken to the full extent of the academic curriculum from a bachelors degree right through to an online PhD degree or Doctorate degree in many fields.

Although it all began with an online IT degree as they were the easiest to carry out on line, the spread of degrees, not just IT but other degree options also, is now prevalent and to do the work online is becoming increasingly popular, particularly in the western world, and as systems improve and develop will continue to be a trusted source of formal education and training long into the future.

If you are diligent and committed an accredited online degree can prove to be a highly beneficial path of study and should be considered by all those whose positions make it worth considering.
