Moonwalking with Einstein Will be Filmed by Columbia Pictures

The true story of a journalist who decides to participate in a competition testing the most acute memories in the United States will find its way to the big screen thanks to Columbia Pictures. They’ve just optioned the rights to the recently-released best seller Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer. The book follows Foer, a science journalist covering the U.S. Memory Championships, who learns the tricks of the memory trade and decides to compete against the best of the best. Read more about the book and the film after the break.

In a news release, Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures said the following:

This is a very special book which transcends the already fascinating subject of memory. By explaining in personal and entertaining fashion a great deal about how our brains work, Joshua has written a book that sheds light on how memory is connected to humanity.

Added producer Matt Tolmach, who is currently producing The Amazing Spider-Man for the studio:

At a time in our lives where we have outsourced so much of our memory to technology, Josh goes on this incredible journey into the inner workings of our memory. What he discovers is stunningly universal and profound.

Moonwalking with Einstein Synopsis:

Moonwalking with Einstein chronicles Foer's real-life experience as a science journalist covering the US Memory Championship who decides to become a participant in the event. As he covers the competition, Foer is astounded to discover that those with the best memories aren't geniuses or savants but regular people who had trained their minds using ancient techniques. Though he's just a guy with an average memory, someone who can't remember where he put his car keys (or even his car), Foer shows that the tricks of the trade are available to anyone as he learns to harness his own brain power and win the memory competition.

LEGEND by Marie Lu will be filmed by CBS Film

Today Publisher’s Lunch announced that CBS Films has purchased the film rights for book 1 in the trilogy. Legend is a post-apocalyptic novel by Marie Lu.

---------
CBS Films has acquired screen rights to Legend, the first of a futuristic novel trilogy by Marie Lu. Twilight Saga producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey will produce through their Temple Hill banner. The first book will be published this November by Penguin Group. UTA sold the movie rights.

This might signal that the film company is growing bolder in attempting to create a franchise. The book takes place in a dark future, when North America is split into two warring nations. Legend focuses on Day, a young Robin Hood figure, and June, a teenage prodigy who is hired to hunt him down. Along the way, the two of them uncover an impossible truth about their totalitarian leaders. The project was brought in by CBS Films prexy/CEO Amy Baer and COO Wolfgang Hammer, the latter of whom made this his first preemptive deal since taking that post. Lu will be involved in the scripting stage as an executive producer.

"The character of Day, a roguish teen outlaw on the run, has been in my head since high school," Lu said. "One night, I was watching an old time detective movie when the idea of Day vs. the gifted teen June came to me."

Said Hammer: "This project is a perfect example of theatrical content with enormous digital possibilities."

Deal follows movement on the Stephen King novel The Stand, in which CBS had a longstanding stake dating back to the original miniseries and will try to turn the massive apocalyptic novel into a film in partnership with Warner Bros.

The life of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks will be filmed by Hollywood.Josephson Entertainment production companies and Michelle Krumm Prods bought the rights to his biography. While Julian Assange idles in the U.K. pending the outcome of his legal problems related to sexual assault charges, his celebrity and cash flow are growing.

WikiLeaks: The Movie moved a step closer to reality after studio executives picked up the screen rights to Andrew Fowler’s autobiography on Julian Assange, The Most Dangerous Man in the World. Assange incurred the ire of U.S. authorities by partnering with the Guardian to publish over 250,000 secret U.S. diplomatic cables. He revealed details of toxic waste dumping in Africa, Guantanamo Bay procedures, and Church of Scientology manuals.

THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN THE WORLD is an in depth look at Assange from his childhood to the current WikiLeaks revolution. Fowler first interviewed Assange in May 2010. The book will be published by Melbourne University Publishing Ltd. in 2011.

In 1974, Thet Sambath's father became one of the nearly two million people who were murdered by the Khmer Rouge when he refused to give them his buffalo. Sambath's mother was forced to marry a Khmer Rouge militiaman and died in childbirth in 1976, while his eldest brother disappeared in 1977. Sambath himself escaped Cambodia at age 10 when the Khmer Rouge fell in 1979. Fast forward to 1998, and Sambath, now a journalist, got to know the children of some senior Khmer Rouge cadre and gradually earned their trust. Then, for a decade, he spent weekends visiting the home of the most senior surviving leader, Nuon Chea, aka Brother Number Two under Pol Pot.

"But he never used to say anything different from what he told Western journalists," says Sambath, "I was low-ranking, 'I knew nothing, I am not a killer.' Then one day he said to me 'Sambath, I trust you, you are the person I would like to tell my story to. Ask me what you want to know.' For the next five years he told me the truth, as he saw it, including all the details of killing." Sambath also won the confidence of lower-level Khmer Rouge soldiers, now ordinary fathers and grandfathers, who demonstrated for him how they slit people's throats. It was the first time these murderers admitted what they had done. He taped their interactions, and together with British documentarian Rob Lemkin created this landmark film.

The New Terminator Movie

When Terminator 4 was announced, the title was obviously way too long. Who wants to see Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins cluttering up a marquee? So it was no surprise when the title was recently changed. What did they come up with? Terminator: Return of the Terminator.

Wow. Obviously the result of a good old brainstorming sesh at the studio when the writers were out on strike.

First of all, is there really a big need to use the word Terminator twice? Do they already know this is going straight to the video store, so they want to make sure people can find it in the "T" section? Return of the Terminator would be dull, but not terrible. Except that to the 5 billion people who saw the first three, no matter how many other robots pop up, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Terminator. And he's not in it. Absence of the Terminator? That probably wouldn't fill seats.

Here are my top options for the fourquel, all of which also wouldn't fill seats. Hmm. Maybe I can copyright the word "fourquel," like Pat Riley did with "threepeat" when he was coaching the Lakers.

Terminator 4: Turns Out, He Will Not Be Back After All
This one gets it out of the way up front. Hasta la Vista, Baby (For Reals) would work just fine, too.

Terminator and Terminatorer
Terrible movie buffs may recall that neither Jim Carrey nor Jeff Daniels would touch the sequel to Dumb and Dumber.

T4: The Phantom Menace
Apparently, they're planning to make Terminator 4 the first in a whole new trilogy. Is it just me, or does this sound familiar?

Terminator Chronicles: Sarah Connor's Son Also Has Chronicles
The show's a hit, just sit back and ride the buzz! And, if the director's really sold on using the same word twice, this one's all chronicley.

T4: We Know, We're Trying to Get Him to Do a Cameo
Hell, maybe they can at least get Maria Shriver to play his robot wife. Wouldn't even need a makeup artist. HEY-OOH!

Terminator X
Sure it's only number four, but the letter X is still hip with the kids, right? And it's not like the series has ever let itself get hung up on logic. Besides, xXx wasn't the thirtieth movie in that series. And hey, maybe they can get the old Public Enemy DJ to do the soundtrack. Actually, that would rule.

Terminator: He Had to Split
It's always a good time to resurrect a line from The Running Man, another Schwarzenegger classic chock-full of great post-kill one-liners. Right before saying this, Arnold cut a guy in half with his own chainsaw. And it works because, you know, the whole thing about him not being in T4. Yes, I'm disappointed.

Terminator Fore
Why not follow in the grand tradition of Teen Wolf Too?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The man in the hat is back! It's been a long time since Harrison Ford returned to his Indiana Jones persona, and a lot of negotiating over scripts, but nearly 20 years since his last outing we will finally be treated to his adventuring once more. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the fourth and most daftly titled Indy movie yet, and all eyes are going to be on whether the once golden partnership between Hollywood heavyweights director Steven Spielberg and producer/writer George Lucas can turn back the clock for Ford to ensure this isn't a film too far for the much-loved franchise.

The plot has been shrouded in mystery deliberately, but what is known is the film is set in 1957 – 19 years since Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and so making it accurate to the time Ford has aged. This is certainly good news as no one wanted the unavoidable fact the star of the show has aged significantly to be glossed over, however the passing of two decades brings with it a dubious change of direction. Lucas’s insistence on the use of a particular way to get the story started resulted in numerous rewrites, including efforts by Frank Darabont and M. Night Shyamalan, before Spider-man scripter David Koepp produced a screenplay deemed worthy. Apparently Indiana Jones will be fighting the against Soviet Union agents for the possession of a crystal skull made by higher powers. The rumour mill has it that there could well be an element of science fiction as that was the popular B-movie genre of the 1950s, moving the Indy series away from its adventuring roots. Could this be a major error of judgement?

Lucas has gone on record to say the critics and fans alike will probably hate The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and the time shift could displease both. Also rather worrying is the inclusion of Shia LaBeouf who exploded into public consciousness after Transformers last year. His character is called Mutt Williams, however, he could well be lined up as a successor to Indy in a possible continuation of the series which would be unpopular with the Indy followers. Even with Raiders of the Lost Art co-star Karen Allen reprising her Marion Ravenwood character, Indy has generally been seen as a bit of a loner rather than family inclined. However, the lack of Sean Connery may have led Lucas, whose most famous father-son relationship featured in the original Star Wars trilogy, to move down a generation to revisit the theme.

John Hurt, Ray Winstone, Cate Blanchett and Jim Broadbent all add a touch of class to the rest of the main characters and Indy will travel to New Mexico, Connecticut, Mexico City and the jungles of Peru to provide the all important mix of varied destinations. Hopefully Spielberg will be projecting various modes of transport onto a progress map like old times. That's probably the best way to approach Indy 4 – think about how it'll remind us of the old times. The official site shows Ford in his classic outfit in typically exotic locations so whatever happens story-wise, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull should provide more than enough whip-toting adventuring to entertain us all in May. Look out for the first trailers appearing soon.

Rambo (2008) Movie Review

One man killing machine John Rambo has never been a screen star known for subtlety, nor has he ever been a great talker. The Vietnam veteran, shell-shocked by the horrors of war, is good at one thing: obliterating all enemies in his path. So when Sylvester Stallone decided it was time to resurrect the second of his iconic characters following the success of Rocky Balboa, there can be few complaints that he opts to make a brutal and excessively violent trip into the Burmese jungle to rescue a group of aid workers who unwittingly become hostages of the nation’s army. Loud, bloody and steeped in graphic portrayals of exploding bodies, this is Rambo back to his murderous best, minus the tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top moments that may well be bemoaned by fans.

After a quick history lesson telling us Burma has been locked in a state of civil war for 60 years and witnessing the atrocities through news reports, we catch up with John Rambo in Thailand. Now much older, he’s now quite happy catching snakes for local gamblers to use in their betting games and fishing with his trusty bow and arrow. Approached by a group of human rights missionaries led by Sarah (Benz) and Michael Bennett (Schulze), he reluctantly guides them up the river into Burma to a village. Leaving them there, they are quickly captured and taken back to a prison camp. Sure enough, it is Rambo who is asked to accompany a team of mercenaries to rescue them. Rambo Duly obliges and finds himself frustrated by the SAS-leader numbskull and a selection of other random 2-D characters. Rambo has certainly never needed such help before, he must be getting on a bit.

Even so, when the Rambo action does kick in, there are some typically gruesome moments such as his ripping of one man’s throat out, taking down five Burmese soldiers at long range in a matter of seconds with arrows and shooting an entire platoon to pieces with an massive gun mounted on the back of a jeep for about 10 minutes. The only thing missing is his old knack of producing a rocket launcher from thin air which is sadly lacking completely. He remains a menace to the bad guys, although he is no longer the one-man show he once was he has others giving him plenty of help. There isn’t the same levels of endless action as previously seen in these films, but it is as effective as ever for getting the pulses racing.

It would be nice to say Rambo is an intelligent study of the Burmese conflict with real political value and not be underestimated from a serious perspective. Of course, if you haven’t guessed already, there is little to support that notion. Stallone claims he is keen to show off the true view of war, so that is presumably why about 2.5 people die every minute in the most gory fashion possible and he has written a script with hilariously misplaced pondering comments such as "live for something, or die for nothing" and "when you’re pushed, killing is as easy as breathing". Yes, Rambo is dumb entertainment as ever, there is just a more brooding style to remove the near cartoon posturing that undermined some of First Blood Part II and ruined Rambo III. If that is what you are expecting, Rambo won’t let you down. It would be harsh to criticise Stallone for simply handing Rambo a final hurrah and giving those who like him so much exactly what they have been waiting for so let’s not knock him too much. He has avoided the embarrassment many predicted and perhaps even surprised a few people. Well done Sly, though we’ll probably never be able to take you seriously.
