8/24/06 - I don't watch as much TV as I used to, but one show that I still watch every time a new season comes out, and then watch repeatedly in reruns and on DVD is 'South Park.' It's filthy, takes on controversial perspectives that separate from comedy I might not otherwise agree with and as it nears its 10th anniversary is arguably running out of material, but [insert expletive here] it, that show is funny. To me. Maybe not to you. But to me, and a lot of people (I am pretty sure), 'South Park' remains one of the funniest TV shows ever produced. I feel the same about South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, which I somehow gave only 3 and a half stars back in 1999, but now I look back on as one of the funniest movies ever made. They followed that up with Team America: World Police, which I found a bit more uneven, but when it was funny, it was hilarious (love that 'America, ***k Yeah!" theme song). Back when 'South Park' was in its early, media sensation days, like a lot of fans, I made sure to see Trey Parker and Matt Stone's two live-action comedies, 'Orgazmo' and 'Cannibal! The Musical.' Neither is consistently, bizarrely funny to me as their non-human work to me, but like 'Team America', they have moments of brilliance. Particularly so for 'Cannibal!', which takes itself so perfectly seriously from beginning to end that the 'joke' is the entire film. It's an earnest, winking-and-yet-not-winking musical about the Donner party, pretty much exactly like the title suggests. Like some of their best stuff, it features pretty good songs too.

And so, Parker and Stone are planning to return to live-action movies with this and Giant Monsters Attack Japan!. The scripts aren't by them, but if that means they can keep 'South Park' fresh on the writing tip, that's *fine* with me.

I also can't help but notice that these Parker/Stone movies were announced by Paramount pretty much at the same time that the big news about the studio ending its relationship with Tom Cruise came out (giving Stone's statement about "big stars" a possible subtext).
