The University of Nottingham is a dynamic and thriving institution, located in the heart of England, and consistently ranks among the top British universities. It is also one of Britain's most popular universities welcoming students from across the world. We currently have 30,000 students from over 140 countries spread over our campuses in the UK and on our campuses in China and Malaysia. Students are offered a choice of over 400 degrees and a multitude of research opportunities.

Teaching and research strengths

The academic work of The University of Nottingham is organised into 31 schools, which are grouped into six faculties: Arts; Education; Engineering; Law and Social Sciences (including the Nottingham University Business School); Medicine and Health Sciences (including the new Veterinary Medicine School) and Sciences (including Agricultural and Food Sciences).

Our excellent reputation for teaching and research is internationally recognised and our mission is to sustain this while providing a first-rate learning environment. 26 of our subject areas were rated 5 or 5* (internationally excellent) in the Research Assessment Exercise and 30 were ranked excellent in the independent assessment of teaching quality TQA. We aim to maintain the spread of research excellence across a range of subject areas, working across the University, with other academic institutions, governments, business and research bodies around the world.

Groundbreaking research groups are steadily being established. These are building on our strengths, identifying further opportunities and expanding into fresh fields and new collaborations. Research in nanotechnology for brain tumours, new materials for hydrogen storage and for use as a clean alternative to fossil fuels, and also research into the origins of HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS, is currently being undertaken. At The University of Nottingham the world's first Genetically Manipulated tomato was developed as well as the Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) Scanner. In conjunction with Ford Motor Company, engineers at the University designed chassis parts for the Bond car 007 used in Die Another Day. Our many ties with industry and business gives students the opportunity to work directly with major companies in the services and manufacturing industries.

Facilities

The University's three UK campuses are considered to be some of the most attractive of any university in the UK. University Park Campus, our biggest, is set in 330 acres of lake and parkland and Jubilee Campus, our most contemporary campus, houses four Schools including the Business School. The Schools of Biosciences and Veterinary Medicine are based at Sutton Bonington Campus, 10 miles south of University Park. The University of Nottingham in Malaysia has an excellent location near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - a lively and cosmopolitan city. And in Ningbo, China - 3 hours south of Shanghai -, you will find our newest campus: The University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus.

Our campuses provide students with modern, high quality laboratory facilities, 24 hour IT facilities, numerous libraries, restaurants, caf³s, shops, sports facilities and a lively Students' Union. The library services include over a million books and journals, extensive manuscript collections and an increasing number of electronic services ranging from catalogues and indexes to electronic journals. Our sports facilities include sports halls, a gym, swimming pool, all-weather pitches and playing fields.

Accommodation is guaranteed for up to three years in one of our 18 student residences to all eligible full-time single students who apply by the required deadline. Students have the choice of on or off campus accommodation as well as catered or self-catered facilities. Single sex accommodation is available as well. The Accommodation Office can also help students who look for privately rented accommodation. For students with families, the Accommodation Office provides advice and limited accommodation.

Student life

The University offers a wide range of social, cultural and recreational facilities including a sports hall and grounds, restaurants, bars, art gallery and a theatre. There is also a support network of pastoral care, medical services and student counsellors. Our StudentsÍ Union provides extensive support, entertainment, clubs and societies and opportunities to get involved in student life and the community. We encourage students to get actively involved with the student and wider community through our societies and clubs. International students automatically become members of the International Students' Bureau (ISB). The Bureau, part of the Students' Union, is run by and for international students. The Bureau looks after students' welfare and organises social, cultural, sports and educational activities, aiming to create a lively international community.

The city of Nottingham, about an hour and a half north of London and 10 minutes from University Park campus, is an exciting and vibrant city offering many facilities for its 50,000 strong student population. The city not only boasts the most sports facilities per person than any other city in Europe, but also offers two theatres, a concert hall, cinemas, art galleries, bars, restaurants and clubs to suit every taste. Nottingham East Midlands airport offers many
flights within Europe and major international airports are only a train or bus journey away.

International community

International students from 140 countries take up nearly 20% of our total population, bringing about a rich diversity in our student community. Scholarships for international students are available for many taught and research courses.
