Netherlands PhD Research Grants in Linguistics at Utrecht University

The Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS (Utrecht University) offers three research grants in its International PhD programme:

Goal
The PhD places involve a research training and aim at the completion of a PhD dissertation within a maximum of three years. As part of their training, PhD students will take courses offered by the National Graduate School in Linguistics (LOT).

Qualifications
Applicants should have an MA degree (or nearing completion, expected graduation by August 2007) in theoretical linguistics, computational linguistics or experimental linguistics (language acquisition, psycholinguistics, phonetics, text linguistics) . Applications in the field of dyslexia are particularly welcome. Applicants should speak and write fluent English.

Grant conditions
The grant amounts to a monthly sum of ?1400, payable at the beginning of each month. It is allocated for a trial period of one year, to be extended upon positive evaluation of the student`s progress by a further two years (maximum). The grant entitles students to supervision, office and library facilities, assistance in finding housing as well as participation in the institute`s support system for linguistics- related expenses (including attending conferences and LOT schools).

For legal reasons, no grants can be offered to permanent residents of the Netherlands.

How to apply?
The deadline for receipt of applications is March 25th, 2007.

Applications (by regular mail or by e-mail) should include a letter of motivation and a 3-5p project proposal (a research question well-grounded in existing literature supplemented with a research strategy, provisional workplan and bibliography) . The application should also include a curriculum vitae including contact and personal details, transcripts of academic results, an MA thesis or alternative piece of written work, certified copies of most recent diploma and passport, and the contact details of two referees (names, affiliations and phone numbers or e-mail addresses). Preferably, reference letters are included.

If applicable, additional written work allowing us to assess the candidate`s suitability for the grant should be submitted by April 27th, 2007 (for example, a finished MA thesis or a more finished draft). Certified copies of diplomas and passport may also be submitted by this date, provided regular copies are included in the original application.

Procedure
Interviews will be held on May 29-30th, 2007, preceded by phone interviews in mid April. Those not invited for interviews will be informed by May 28th. Final decisions will be made by July 15th , 2007. The preferred starting date for the grants will be September 1st, 2007.
